Different phases deserve different levels of detail. A pilot new to mountain flying built a dedicated pre-crossing checklist, thorough, because the stakes and the unfamiliarity earn it. VFR and IFR approaches got split into separate "into the terminal area" lists, each with the detail that approach actually needs.
The procedures nobody remembers
Some things you need once a year and never recall under pressure: IFR non-radar position reporting, light-gun signals, what to do when you lose GPS (the nearest MON/VOR facility). Don't lie, you can't remember these either. They don't belong in your normal flow. They belong in an "abnormal / reference" section you can pull up the moment you need it and ignore the rest of the time.
